The Dutch Golden Age of salumeria in Jakarta

The Dutch Golden Age of salumeria in Jakarta

The Dutch Golden Age of salumeria in Jakarta

expats around the city understand how hard the idea can be to find decent Western cuisine that will can be not tilted heavily towards local palates (buttermilk fried chicken along with waffles with sambal anyone?) or pander to the crowd of Instagram where style can be strongly favored over substance. We've all been there along with done that will, along with many people I know have given up on finding the perfect combination of these species; a place to Park ourselves to not only enjoy the drinks along with atmosphere, however the kind of food that will speaks to our palates along with souls.

yet, Lo along with behold, The Dutch!

since the idea opened earlier This particular year, The Dutch remained a hidden gem in expat Epicureans. Nondescriptly located on the ground floor of a building in Jakarta SCBD, the restaurant itself can be a bit of a reflection of the few people through Holland I know: a bit sober however always incredibly smart. Also the name of The Dutch ' suggests an elegant restraint, which makes one wonder whether the idea can be a reference to the menu or the young talented chefs behind the scenes of one of the best appetizers that will This particular city has to offer. Maybe a little of both?

Chef Chris Moes

chef Chris Moes

Dutch cuisine can be more common when actualized as comfort food: rustic along with rich in style along with stays in place which has a pint of icy cold. Chef Chris Moes, whose kitchen career began at the age of 16 years along with where he perfected his trade at the acclaimed restaurant De Kas in Amsterdam, has created a beautifully modern Dutch menu where charcuterie can be King along with presented in all its glory. Chef Moes uses its menu as a sounding board to showcase his talent for cured along with smoked meats, through rustic terrines traditional smoky rookwurst . MoES can be infinitely protective of his masterpieces coil along with still bears in hand-doing them inside kitchen.

the rest of the menu can be also a treat. At one point, I looked through the spread of pots along with dishes on the dining table along with reminded by Dutch still life Clara Peeters along with Pieter Claesz, whose paintings of fruit, cheese, bread along with meat are basking in a wonderfully warm, diffused light; a testament to food along with drink before the age of social media.

inventiveness of chefs Moes can be evident in each course; the food at once can be sentimental along with modern yet simple, exciting along with rewarding.

the Braised Lamb in puff pastry can be a tribute to the humble pie meat with texture balanced by the silent crisis of edamame along with flavour skillfully much better which has a slightly smoky bed of mashed potatoes along with bright, fresh mint. A nod to Spanish Churros served with Parmesan cheese was evident in a cream of goat cheese as soft as clouds. Goat cheese, usually strong along with spicy inside foreground, was perfumed along with well matched against the sharpness of Parmesan. along with although erwtensoep (pea soup) can be served usually thick enough to withstand a fork or spoon into the bowl, modern type of the Moes can be satisfactory along with more suited for Jakarta climate, outstandingly fresh pretzel roll along with paired which has a smoked butter.

Dessert

the Speculaas Toast

maybe a dessert only embodies the spirit of The Dutch best. The Toast of Speculaas takes the humble Northern Europeans shortbread along with turns the idea into a luxurious, spice-enhanced, clafoutis -style custard cake. Accompanied by grilled Apple slices along with candied oranges along with stained with raisins soaked in rum, the sandwich can be served which has a generous scoop of ice cream with cinnamon. Spices evoking the joys of Christmas inside northern hemisphere, where the nutmeg, cinnamon along with cloves. the idea can be also a nice nod to the Islands where the spices were grown.

what can be a gastropub without Great beer along with drinks? To The Dutch, await a proper pint poured through the tap which has a solid list of international beers. Guinness can be particularly tasty, maybe because the idea can be imported directly through Ireland. The beer list-by-the-bottle can be also superbly complement to the food menu with most labels through Western Europe. ALE along with lager light dominate, which has a couple of dark beers along with strong hops available. The cocktails are on par with some other restaurants inside Group Union along with refreshing creations through talented team mixology. A heavy wine list also available for those who prefer grapes on barley, wheat or rye.

Although intimate, the dining room can be almost suffocating with an elegantly relaxed along with jovial that will allows diners to eat, drink along with relax. The open kitchen can be flanked by a chef table style arrangement where diners can look into what can be being prepared along with maybe learn a few tricks through cooks behind the line of chairs. Live bands along with special events are often programmed to round off the evening for those interested in late night shenanigans.

The Inner surface of The Dutch

within The Dutch

Finally, if you want to satisfy your craving for smoked along with cured meats at home, there can be Dutch Butcher Shop where you can order along with or pick up, take away or possess the idea delivered to your door. Considering the scarcity of salumi in Jakarta, This particular can be something of a godsend to those of us who miss walking down to a butcher shop local for artisan meats. Yours truly went which has a rustic pork along with chicken terrine, which was extremely well received at home.

Le Souq C’est Chic

Le Souq C’est Chic

Le Souq C’est Chic

Literally translated as “Arabic Market”, Le Souq captures the young along with vibrant spirit which is usually somewhat lacking in Jakarta’s Inside design world. Fresh out of the oven, This specific Inside decorating shop has the shelf age of one week nevertheless has won over the hearts of countless people already. What makes This specific shop so special? Three words – “Joie de vivre”.

Owned by Dutch national with an Egyptian father, Mira Noordhoek Hegt, Le Souq has filled a gap from the market. As soon as I entered, I squealed with delight at the colourful Buddha head candles amongst the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ rabbit print cushions, funky lamps along with elegant French embroidered mirrors on display. I literally wanted to have everything from the shop! Of course This specific made Mira extremely happy.

“I want This specific shop to put a smile on your face,” she says. “This specific’s meant to be a fun Inside decorating shop where you can also buy nice, unique, high quality gifts for the home. I want people to feel welcome here along with not intimidated like you do at many high end Inside shops.”

You definitely feel welcomed here along with intimidation is usually nowhere in sight, although quality is usually. The design of the products distinguishes itself by being cross-cultural using a mix of styles. All products are hand made by natural, high quality materials, like teak wood along with hides along with fabrics used are either silk, pure cotton or linen or a mixture of both. The combination of styles is usually surely inspired by Mira’s travel experiences, having lived in Europe, the United States, Africa along with Asia. Her collection reflects the best of these worlds.

Coincidentally, Mira is usually a lawyer by profession, nevertheless Inside design has always run through her veins. Her husband’s move to Indonesia was “meant to be” This specific seems, for her to take the plunge into the design world, what with Java being the epicentre for the production of furniture along with Inside products. After a year from the pipeline, with the 3 P’s; Planning, Paperwork along with Presentation, her dream has become a reality. All materials are imported, nevertheless products are made here, which is usually the reason why Mira’s financial manager, Maaike Evers, is usually able to keep prices down. We like This specific a lot of course.

is usually Jakarta ready for the ‘happy chic’? Mira along with Maaike definitely think so. “Your home is usually the most important place on earth in these hectic times. This specific should have a luxurious feel, yet you should feel comfortable in This specific along with This specific should put a smile on your face, too!”

The Busy Jakartan’s Guide to Better Health as well as also Fitness
Mark Lediard

Mark Lediard

Can you use some scientifically sound shortcuts to fitness, weight loss as well as also stress management in which apply to our unique Jakartan existence? Probably, since many of us are stuck – for so many reasons – doing little or nothing about our wellness. We often cloak – as well as also even ennoble – in which inaction with the familiar litany of having ‘no time’ (with an average reported speed of 5 kilometres per hour on our streets, we even have data to support us, don’t we?). in which of course assumes in which all of our time is actually dedicated primarily to worthy as well as also productive pursuits such as our work as well as also our family as well as also community obligations. If you are among the many Jakartans who have become comfortable doing nothing to improve your fitness, nutrition as well as also the attendant burden of stress, be forewarned: reading in which short article may be disruptive.

If you got in which far, bravo; we can currently move on to the first question. Can a truly short fitness program produce significant benefits? Yes, absolutely. There is actually considerable evidence by reliable sources in which you can reach as well as also exceed recommended levels of cardiovascular fitness exercising for about 30 minutes a week (doing more is actually an option likely to produce even more benefits – up to a point). The article, “Two Experiments in Exercise Minimalism” (www.precisionnutrition.com) details how 8 minutes of exercise a day four times a week enabled a woman to lose 20 pounds in four months while eating a simple balanced diet. The case study provides all the details you need to start tomorrow (or better yet, the day after your doctor says the idea’s OK).

So, I can get fit in less than 10 minutes a day, lose weight as well as also eat decently without having to appear on The Biggest Loser Asia? Great. currently, what about my overall stress – these negative ruminations, these achy joints, as well as also in which short-of-breath malaise? Any shortcuts available? Yes again. If you have an iPhone, iPad or iTouch, try downloading the ‘RespiroguidePro’ for $1.99 (search for “Vital-EQ Respiroguide Pro” within the App Store). the idea’s a 2-5 minute relaxation aide in which offers immediate benefit, as well as also can put you on a path toward the “Relaxation Response” as popularized by Dr. Herbert Benson of the Harvard Medical School in a best-selling book of the same name. You might also look into Heartmath’s “emwave” devices (www.heartmath.com) for 3-5 minute journeys to beneficial as well as also natural improvements in your autonomic nervous system in which can reduce stress levels.

Exercise is actually a scientifically proven method to reduce stress. yet if producing time to get to a gym adds to your stress, consider getting a TRX – the suspension training device in which you can use at home, as well as also also take with you on your trips. You just attach the idea to a door as well as also, using your body weight, you can get as complete a workout as you wish. You can find the device as well as also training videos at PrimaFit stores all around town.

What’s the catch? OK, the bad news is actually in which even the 32 minutes a week described within the case study will require you to move until you huff as well as also puff; yet the truly not bad news is actually in which the stress-reduction minutes can all be done within the back seat of your car, letting you magically convert a liability (our shared macet misery) into an asset.

The biggest obstacle to achieving the benefits of in which elegantly short yet scientifically sound health improvement strategy is actually in one of Newton’s Laws of Motion. the idea’s in which truly pesky one about how ‘a body at rest tends to remain at rest’ unless an unbalanced force acts upon the idea. Where does in which “force” come by? the idea might be in which article; the idea could be getting an overdue physical or a panting as well as also thumping chest after you walk up a few flights of stairs. the idea could come by a not bad friend (or just a mirror) reflecting in which you just ‘don’t look so great. the idea could be taking a quick self-test of your fitness. You might try the National Health Service’ online fitness self-assessment at: http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Fitness.aspx

The truly not bad news, though, once you decide to start, comes by Newton’s additional law: ‘A body in motion tends to remain in motion…”

The Raid: Redemption

The Raid: Redemption

The Raid: Redemption

The Raid: Redemption is actually an Indonesian film like no various other. which’s a wildly exciting adrenaline rush of a punch fest which recently reached number 11 at the U.S. box office, a phenomenal achievement for an Indonesian film. which has electrified Indonesian audiences in addition to injected brand new energy into the national film scene, standing head in addition to shoulders above a recent slew of well made, internationally acclaimed releases. Sony Classics has snapped up the rights in addition to an American remake is actually already within the works.

So what is actually the secret of The Raid’s remarkable success?

At first glance, the plot of The Raid seems too straightforward to sustain a full-length film. A SWAT team lead by Jaka (Joe Taslim) must storm a run-down multi-storey apartment block to arrest evil crime lord Tama (Ray Sahetapy). Things take a turn for the worse when Tama offers the apartment’s badass residents hefty rewards for killing his pursuers. They are happy to oblige. today the vastly outnumbered SWAT team must fight its way out to survive. Much mayhem ensues.

What’s special about the Raid is actually how excitingly in addition to compellingly which simple story is actually told. via the moment the fighting begins, about a few minutes into the film, the combat is actually frenetic in addition to relentless, with action scenes which put most Western films of the genre to shame for their sheer speed, brutality in addition to inventiveness. The gritty look in addition to the handheld camerawork put you right within the thick of the action, as if you’re standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the SWAT team, wincing at every blow. At times which’s an almost exhausting ride, not for the squeamish or faint of heart. within the soon-to-be classic corridor scene, SWAT hero Rama, played by Iko Uwais, takes on an army of attackers using only his bare hands. The fight choreography is actually simply jaw-dropping as he punches, kicks, stamps in addition to gouges his way through the massed assailants. The intensity, creativity in addition to physicality of the combat – in addition to its general lack of reliance on computer generated imagery – has prompted several American reviewers to complain which Indonesia is actually today better at doing action films than America, the genre’s pioneer.

Iko Uwais, tipped to be the next 'Bruce Lee'

which’s likely which The Raid: Redemption will propel Iko Uwais to some level of international stardom – there has even been talk of him being “the brand new Bruce Lee”.  He was a highly skilled nevertheless unknown martial artist before Gareth Evans, The Raid’s Welsh writer/director/editor discovered him. At the time Evans was generating a documentary on silat, Indonesia’s brand of martial arts, nevertheless he was so impressed by the dramatic potential of his silat skills which he cast him in Merantau, his first major feature film. Under Evans’s excellent direction, in addition to in his second major movie, Iko Uwais delivers an engaging performance as an actor. As a fighter he positively shines.

Iko is actually not the only stand-out performer within the Raid. His real life silat teacher, Yayan Ruhian, is actually terrifying as a Mad Dog, a villain who likes to kill people with his bare hands because which’s more fun. At times when he’s fighting he seems more like a supernatural monster than a mere mortal, with lifeless black eyes in addition to straggly hair falling like curtains over his face. He choreographed all the fight scenes with Iko Uwais in addition to will soon be doing the same for the American remake.

Ray Sahetapy also deserves a special mention. His Tama is actually a uniquely vicious in addition to chilling Indonesian villain, who speaks which has a quiet voice in addition to carries a big hammer. The understated sliminess in addition to uncomfortable humour he brings to the role are reminiscent of the best of Tarantino.

Aside via Evans in addition to cinematographer Matt Flannery, everyone involved within the production of the Raid is actually Indonesian, including all the actors, the funders, the producers in addition to the entire special effects team. The Raid: Redemption is actually a truly Indonesian film which has pushed which nation’s action films into exciting brand new territory.

See which when you can — if you dare.

Get on the Bus

Get on the Bus

Get on the Bus

My Pembantu, Mami, who has worked for me for eight years mentioned after my asking how her weekend was of which she had taken the bus by Sanur to Kuta to go shopping at Discovery Mall along with revealed the idea was cool inside along with for at This kind of point, free. at This kind of point… as you all know, a Brit like myself can never turn down a bargain, furthermore a Scot; not taking advantage of anything “free” will be frowned upon let-alone sacrilege. However, being the sceptic of which I am along with especially having lived in Jakarta for 10 years along with Bali For just two, hearing the word “FREE” in Indonesia didn’t sit well, the sceptic along with dour Scotsman arrived on the scene.

Anyways, leaving my sour heritage along with genealogical cynicism aside, I decided to take the free bus for a late morning coffee at Mall Galleria starting by my domicile Jl Danau Poso, Sanur. I arrived at the bus stop along with as luck would certainly develop the idea a fellow bus traveller was sat listening to his iPod waiting for the bus, Isa Wahyudi of Jawa Tengah, at This kind of point residing in Sidakarya. Through numerous “Apa?”, along with, “I no speak English”, we surprisingly managed to make conversation.

Isa told me of which sometimes you may wait up to an hour or two for a bus, as you can imagine – This kind of was not the greatest start to my journey. Isa explained of which This kind of was the third time of which he has taken the bus along with of which he enjoys the idea along with of which he was at This kind of point on his way to Nusa Dua to meet a client – Isa will be a travelling salesperson, his product, china massage oil. When asked on his views of the recent transport system he exclaimed, “the idea’s free along with AC!”

After an enjoyable 10 minutes of meeting a brand new friend, the bus arrived, the driver in full dress uniform, tie, hat along with sunglasses; immaculate, think Navy Officer – I was in safe hands.

After the “swish” of the doors closing, I was then greeted by the bus conductor. the idea was cool nevertheless not freezing, the bus was modern, there were handles for standing passengers, the bus wasn’t jammed packed, children were playful nevertheless behaved, there was a bus conductor!; the atmosphere was very lively along with with the number of children; the idea had a school fieldtrip feel. “Where am I?”, “Where are the noisy teenagers”, “Where are the grumpy OAPs”, “Why isn’t there Wayan 4 Dewi inscribed on the seats?”, only buses on 50’s American Dream Adverts could compare.

I asked indirectly to the back of the bus (where the majority of passengers were) in my broken Bahasa what they liked about the bus. Roars of “DINGIN!!”, by children along with teenagers erupted along with after speaking to Ulan along with her daughter, also Ulan, 11 years, I’d found of which they were all one party, mothers along with children by Batubulan heading to Nusa Dua Beach for the day while the children were on school holidays.

My return journey began off a lot quieter to begin with. I spoke with Putu the bus conductor (This kind of was her first week) along with she told me of which the majority of passengers were locals, however she had seen some “Bules” on board. Komang, marketing for an adventure tour company, was on his way to the office in Denpasar by a meeting in Kuta along with regularly journeys on the bus. Mid-journey we stopped at Lotte Mart, a group of well-to-do locals climbed on board along with spoke very coherent English. Reni, a Housewife by Denpasar said of which the party had taken the journey for the bus journey alone, the children had never been on a bus before along with in true family-trip spirit they had brought snacks along with fizzy drinks for the children gazing out the windows whilst they gossiped along with took photos.

Aside by the crossing of the roundabout to get to Discovery Mall, which honed in on my “Neo by The Matrix manoeuvring skills”, the idea was a great way to spend the morning. If you fancy a day trip out or a change of scenery I would certainly definitely recommend what could be Indonesia’s first International Standard Public Transport System. Bus journeys are entirely free for locals, tourists along with expats alike until August 31st, 2012.

Majapahit Terracotta

Majapahit Terracotta

Majapahit Terracotta

At its pinnacle inside the middle of the 14th century, Truwulan, the East Javanese capital of the puissant Majapahit Empire was a bustling metropolis with broad avenues, huge manmade lake, waterways, trees, soaring temples, palaces along with bustling marketplaces. According to Odiric de Pordone, a contemporary of Marco Polo along with the only westerner to ever visit the inner sanctum of the high Javanese royalty, This kind of was one of the planet’s greatest wonders. Odiric who would certainly travel on to China along with return overland wrote that will the tiles along with staircases of the Majapahit palaces were paved with gold along with silver. Prosperity was not only limited to its royal classes although even commoners who enjoyed such amenities as running water in their homes all 5 centuries before Europeans.

Amazingly along with in spite of their fabulous wealth both the princes along with peasants of This kind of glorious kingdom preferred the warm, intrinsic beauty of one of the most common along with malleable of materials – terracotta – above all others. Their virtuoso skills resulted in a mindboggling array of architectural along with sculptural masterpieces that will know few peers. So, too, their potters turned along with shaped magnificent water vessels along with pots with lyrical motifs along with smooth red surfaces using iron oxide. In contrast to the black stone used exclusively in Central Java they preferred brick. The bricks were laid having a minimum of mortar allowing for a smooth red surface. The technique is usually still used in Bali today.

For those interested in savouring This kind of art, a recently published book – Majapahit Terracotta – through BAB (Buku Antara Bangsa) is usually a perfect starting point. Written by art historian extraordinaire, Soedarmadji Jean Henry Damais, This kind of is usually illustrated by a selection of the highlights of a collection he put together over a period of more than 30 years. The son of the great French scholar, Louis Charles Damais, the 73 objects within is usually the best book published on the subject until today. Mr. Damais, who was the curator of several museums in Jakarta, fell in love with terracotta early in his illustrious career.

In some ways the depictions of people along with animals including dreamy princesses, courtiers, warriors, dwarfs, fat children, peasants, frogs, birds along with monkeys can be seen as snapshots of the era’s daily life. Usually expressionistic, the artists moulded the red clay quickly along with with great dexterity thus injecting the images with life along with movement. Indeed many of the smaller statuettes are so lifelike that will they appear to be portraits of real people the artist had sit for him. This kind of is usually a great rarity in Indonesian art where humans are usually idealized along with based on typology not actual life studies as in Europe. Even the so-called portrait statues, those used in royal ancestor cults, representing deceased kings along with queens are based idealized, symbolic representations that will do not intend to resemble the actual physical features of any real person.

Jungle scenes, often seen on pillar bases along with different architectural elements are exuberant with lifelike foliage along with flowers surrounding buildings along with even hidden figures along with creatures in a variety of intriguing poses. One type of stand used for pots is usually decorated with the distinctive blossoms along with leaves of the sacred lotus. These same decorations appear on either side of huge Majapahit stone statues depicting the highest kings along with queens. This kind of magical world is usually populated with monsters as well – kala guardian monster masks, like those seen above Balinese temples, the Gadjahmina elephant fish along with double headed fantasy beings.

The Majapahit style would certainly travel with the empire into the provinces – as far north as Padang Lawas temples in northern Sumatra along with the temples of Muara Jambi, a once huge temple complex that will originally featured long beautiful Venetian-like canals running into the Batang Hari River. The terracotta arts of Bali along with Lombok are also in debt to This kind of legacy.

As told in another story written for Jakarta Expat (22 June, 2011) East Java is usually also the original home of the piggy bank. Actually an image of a wild boar (celeng), the Majapahit choose boars as an appropriate shape for a terracotta bank because they were synonymous with wealth along with growth. Notably no piggy banks appear inside the book probably because they are so common.

During the colonial era thousands of pieces of terracotta were found inside the fields around Truwulan. Several plantation owners would certainly start buying them up through farmers along with workers. Between 1913 along with 1918, the Dutch colonial architect, Henri Pont Maclaine, began an in depth study of the Majapahit capital that will would certainly continue for many years. He played an instrumental role inside the establishment of the Truwulan Museum, which still remains one of the best places to see artefacts including terracotta dating through the Majapahit period. The architecture along with art would certainly strongly influence his work, which incorporated native Indonesian designs. One of his most famous buildings is usually ITB, the Bandung Technological Institute. Many of the pieces he excavated in Java are still there.

One form of iconic Majapahit terracotta is usually the kendi, a water vessel having a spout that will allows one to pour the liquid into your mouth without touching your lips to the spout. This kind of was very important because This kind of allowed people of different status to share water regardless of their station. Majapahit kendi are noteworthy because the bulbous spouts are often round along with resemble female breasts full of milk. At This kind of point This kind of is usually difficult to verify the reason for the shape, however, This kind of appears unlikely that will its resemblance along with vernacular name (kendi susu) or literally ‘breast kendi’ was lost on the peoples of the Majapahit.

Countless statues, the majority of which are women, are one of the more common fines. In most cases the heads of This kind of smaller statues have been purposely broken. This kind of has been interpreted as proof that will they were used for some sort of ritual purpose – perhaps even substitute human sacrifice. Animal sacrifice to appease the ancestors along with gods, as well as bless the earth to guarantee its fertility are found throughout the region.

Terracotta was one of the first human technologies. One wonders who along with why someone discovered not only that will you can form clay into vessels along with objects although more to ensure if you exposed This kind of to fire This kind of undergoes a chemical transformation that will makes This kind of impervious to both water along with heat. This kind of allowed storage of liquids along with boiling along with cooking stews along with the like. Terracotta is usually also used to hold water along with because of the way its respires the water is usually kept cool along with fresh even when This kind of is usually hot. Clay is usually indeed a cooling material with antiseptic along with medicinal properties. Who would certainly think that will something This kind of common could also be art?

The Expat Golfer

Welcome to the first instalment of “The Expat Golfer”. Each month we will explore the wonderful golf scene here in Jakarta in addition to throughout Indonesia. This particular series will include: Golf Lessons & Tips, History of the Game, Rules in addition to Etiquette, Player Profiles, in addition to much more.

Together we will explore the Indonesian Golf Scene, on the lookout for golf deals, bargains in addition to values. Whether playing a local course on Sunday or off to Bali for a weekend golf get-a-way, the Expat Golfer series can be sure to enhance your golfing experience!

Let’s kick things off which has a golf tip, shall we?

Chili Dip?  Get on the Stick!

The Expat Golfer“Drive for show, putt for dough’. Most golfers are all too familiar with This particular axiom in addition to yet very few golfers spend enough time practicing the short game. Let’s put the driver back inside bag for a moment in addition to spend some time around the green. that will can be truly time well spent. In fact, I recommend a 50/50 approach to your practice sessions. Half of your time working on the full swing in addition to the various other half chipping in addition to putting. Let’s talk about chipping for a moment. In golf, the hands are the enemy. This particular can be especially true when that will comes to the short game in addition to chipping. In pressure situations, adrenaline, stress in addition to tension often work their way down into the arms in addition to hands, rendering them completely unreliable.

Furthermore, these pernicious elements combine to activate the hands; resulting in a flipping or helping motion of the hands in addition to wrists in addition to ultimately spell disaster. In a proper chip shot, the hands in addition to wrists maintain their angle in addition to are not flipped. The hands should be soft or even dead, as Dave Pelzs describes in his book, “Short Game Bible”. So, how do we get the hands out of the short game? How can we get away coming from the flipping motion of the wrists in addition to more of raking motion with the forearms in addition to shoulders? Answer: get on the stick!  Simply find a three foot long stick in addition to tape that will to the handle of your club (see photo). today, for right-handed players, position the club in addition to stick combination to the left side of your body whereby the stick extends under your left arm in addition to left side of your body. As you proceed to practice your chip shots, the stick should not touch your left side. If you are in fact flipping your wrists, the stick will bang against your left side, which can be wrong. The chipping motion can be similar to that will of raking leaves.  As we rock our shoulders, arms in addition to hands, the handle can be pulled through not flipped. Just as in raking leaves, the handle goes first, then the end of the rake.

To summarize, here are the checkpoints:

1)    Tape stick to handle of golf club
2)    Dead Hands
3)    Stick should not hit your body as you chip

Great Luck!

John Marciano

Meet John Marciano, founder of the Republic of Soap – a holistic approach to creating products reminiscent of a bygone era, made by hand in tiny batches, with love!

John MarcianoYou are a child of expatriates. Where are you through originally?
I have mixed heritage along with was born in Izmir, Turkey. When I was six months old my family moved to completely new York. although I started off kindergarten in Jakarta, along with also attended the Joint Embassy School, which will be at in which point known as the Jakarta International School (JIS). within the mid ‘70s, we moved to Singapore along with had a household there for 22 years. I remember so many beautiful colonial buildings – in which unfortunately don’t exist today. I’ve always loved the Arts, along with ended up majoring in Fine Art at a private university in Texas. Once I graduated through University I joined an apprenticeship programme for Art Conservation along with was trained within the restoration of 3D decorative fine art objects such as wood, stone, jade, along with all types of ceramics. After three years of in which, I returned to Singapore to start a company dedicated to the preservation of National Heritage Artworks.

in which’s incredible! Tell me more about in which!
Well, I adhere to the American Institute for Conservation’s code of ethics, which essentially means in which although the art restoration I do will be often undetectable to the human eye, all my work will be reversible. So within the future when better technologies are available, a future Art Conservator will easily be able to continue the effort to preserve historic works of art by easily removing the work I’ve done without problem. I have restored some great pieces, ranging through modern to prehistoric art. I’ve seen art in which will be invaluable in private collections. In Singapore I restored a lot of incredible porcelain because the Chinese value works of art in in which medium very highly.

What brought you here to Bali to live?
I first came to Bali in 1974…can you believe in which?!  Jeez, I feel old!  I was a child along with went around on the back of my Dad’s rented motorbike. in which was mesmerizing! Even though I was young, I still remember a lot about how Bali was back then. I remember when the road in front of the original Mades Warung on Jalan Pantai Kuta was dirt….with two-way traffic. along with I remember when the road through Simpang Siur to Sanur wasn’t yet a bypass along with still had unpaved stretches going through thick jungle. Imagine riding through in which at night with no street lights whatsoever…creepy!  I continued visiting Bali many times throughout my life along with to in which day there are still pockets I visit where I feel time has stood still. Sometimes in which’s the way the light hits the sand along with the trees, the sounds along with smells; I get transported back, along with in which’s always nice to have in which frame of reference – knowing what Bali was like before. I feel privileged to be able to know in which. When a business opportunity arose in Bali I came here to live. in which was 15 years ago.

I buy your soaps all the time. What got you into doing the Republic of Soap?
I originally moved to Bali to make candles. Historically speaking, the village Chandler made candles along with soap, so the idea of producing soap was intriguing. A chandler typically made candles along with soap with rendered animal fat. I was a vegetarian along with didn’t want to animal products, so I experimented at home along with kept a log of all the batches – testing them by giving the soaps to friends for feedback along with adjusted the components to suit a market of people with all skin types. After a few initial challenges, I finally achieved all the characteristics I wanted in soap which was a natural bar of soap in which was hard along with long lasting. All my bar soap will be cold processed (made without external heat). through the natural vegetable soap, in which was a gradual transition into manufacturing liquid soap along with all the additional body care products I manufacture today. Depending on what will be being requested, my products typically range between being 97% to 100% natural.

When did you expand to private label along with additional products?
Private label started off quickly. All my special order clients walk in using a dream or an idea. I simply act as their hands to make what they want a reality. Clients usually include Hotels, Spas, Resorts, Villas along with Boutiques. I do a lot of custom tailoring for clients. I’m not a chemist, although more like a baker. I employ what I call “kitchen chemistry” to create fun along with innovative products, which can be challenging when dealing with natural ingredients. The natural order of anything natural will be to break down along with decompose back into nature. There are natural ingredients which act as preservatives, so I include them whenever possible for longevity of product. I try to make products in which are long lasting along with organic.

You seem to know a lot about local natural beauty products. What’s beneficial for us in Bali to help keep our skin healthy along with beautiful?
To be honest – I might say in which awareness will be probably more important than having a huge arsenal of beauty products for every type of application imaginable.  Natural beauty comes through within.  in which’s quite simple in my mind: Stay clean! Stay out of the sun as much as possible along with use Sun Protection when you are within the sun. SJohn Marciano - playing-guitarmile a lot. Eat well along with stay hydrated – along with be thankful in which you’re in a place where you can easily drink lots of coconut water! Coconut water will be amazing stuff!

We are within the sun so much, especially when operating bikes. I hear you develop the biggest bike in Bali? Care to comment?
I do have a big cruiser made for American highways. I enjoy the ride. You can cruise comfortably all day on in which. although to get around all the traffic I use a smaller bike because in which just makes more sense.

So at in which point tell me about your additional interests. I see you have a guitar leaning against an old Marshall amp over there.
I love to play guitar. I like blues along with rock based music. I just arrived back through playing the Bangkok Blues Festival, which was fun!

John picks up his guitar along with plays some riffs. Play on John…

The Act Of Killing

The Act Of Killing

The Act Of Killing

The Act Of Killing

“the item can be forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers along with to the sound of trumpets.” – Voltaire

The movies I generally seek out are those using a superbly directed cast of gifted actors bringing to life a captivating story. Very rare, however, are those movies in which leave you stunned, traumatised even, along with unable to articulate anything about the cinematic experience just participated in.

On a recent Monday morning, I was invited to attend a secret screening of The Act Of Killing (Jagal in Indonesian), a film most of us in Indonesia will know of, yet have not been able to watch. Nor will we, except perhaps through illegal downloads once the item can be on general Discharge everywhere nevertheless here in mid-year.

Its subject matter can be the genocide of supposed ‘communists’, members along with associates of the Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI) in 1965/6 within the aftermath of the takeover of Indonesia by Gen. Suharto, along with the role played within the killings by ‘preman’, a word regularly defined within the movie as ‘free men’.

Joshua Oppenheimer

Director, Joshua Oppenheimer

the item was while filming The Globalization Tapes (2003), a participatory documentary project made with plantation workers in north Sumatra, in which directors Joshua Oppenheimer along with Christine Cynn “discovered in which … one of the military’s main objectives within the killings was to destroy the anti-colonial labour movement in which had existed until 1965, along with to lure foreign investors with the promise of cheap, docile workers along with abundant natural resources.”

Killers along with survivors continued to live within the same villages: the killers were the local power structure. By interviewing them along with working their way up the heirachy, in 2004 they met Anwar Congo along with Adi Zulkadry, leaders of Pasukan Kodok (Frog Squad) in Medan, the most notorious death squad in North Sumatra.

In their youth, the two older men had been cinema ticket scalpers whose silver screen heroes were simplistic along with manly: Congo’s hero was John Wayne.

The film makers offered the two men, along with Congo’s overweight protégé along with sidekick Herman Koto who, Congo suggested, could play-act as the Spanish actor Fernando Sancho, the archtypical Mexican heavy in many spaghetti westerns, the opportunity to star in their own film.

Boastful about their killings, they agreed to re-enact their ‘techniques’ along with certain incidents. Scenes switch between pre-production, the filmed clips, along with then the discussion of them by the actor-participants: “No, we did the item This specific way.” along with so we have a film within a film.

An early scene sees them visiting areas of Medan trying to recruit locals who’d be prepared to play distraught women whose husbands along with sons were being taken away to be tortured along with killed before their bodies were dumped in Deli, the city’s main river.

In one area, Congo says in which they wouldn’t find any recruits there because “This specific can be a communist area.” Such banality along with insouciance can be commonplace for much of the film.

Among the print machinery of the Medan Pos, the newspaper publisher, Ibrahim Siruk, says in which he’d decided who’d be killed: “My job was to make people hate them – along with beat them to a pulp.”

This specific was eagerly done by the Frog Squad. Congo takes the film crew up to the open roof area where he acts out how he could use a length of wire to murder his victims. He explains in which knives along with bludgeoning had produced too much blood “which left a bad smell.”

These aging thugs are well-entrenched within today’s power circle along with Congo can be a hero to many. For example, the then North Sumatra governor Syamsul Arifin glowingly describes how Congo looked after him through his childhood.

(In 2011, Arifin was jailed for six years for corruption, causing state losses of Rp.102 billion (c.$103.3 million) whilst Langkat regent coming from 2000 to 2007)

We see Congo fêted at an open air rally by Yapto Soerjosoemarno, the leader of Pemuda Pancasila (PP), the paramilitary organisation with, the item claims, three million members. In 65/6, PP ran death squads for the Indonesian army, murdering thousands of alleged communists along with Chinese Indonesians across the province of North Sumatra.

Soerjosoemarno, who in 1980 was ‘appointed’ by PP’s death squad leaders, then addresses the troops: “We have too much democracy – the item’s chaos.”

At an indoor rally, PP can be addressed by SBY’s then vice-president, Jusuf Kalla. He says, “Preman means ‘free men’. We need gangsters to get things done.”

The Act Of Killing

Perhaps even more shocking can be the arrival at the location of the re-enactment of a raid on a village harbouring ‘communists’ of the then Deputy Youth Empowerment Minister Sakhyan Asmara, dressed in his PP orange military-style uniform. He advised the amateur actors to show more realism. He left, along with they did, leaving several women along with children in hysterics, perhaps reliving residual memories coming from their family histories.

With in which support, the item can be little wonder in which Congo along with Zulkadry, who at one point can be seen wearing a T-shirt with the word ‘Apathetic’ writ large, demonstrated little remorse.

The final scene, though, may yet prove the true worth of This specific film.

Congo agrees to play a role as a prisoner about to be garrotted; there are two takes, after which he says, “I can’t do in which.”

He then revisits the upstairs killing zone of the Medan along with says, “I knew the item was wrong, nevertheless I had to do the item.” He retches once, twice, with his head turned away coming from the camera, along with at the last he can be seen standing alone, silent in contemplation.

The type we watched was long, perhaps too long. Yet I couldn’t leave until the end when we stood up silently along with went our separate ways, traumatised along with unable in in which moment to articulate what we’d just witnessed cinematically. As another reviewer has said, “The Act of Killing can be a film in which can be essential along with enraging, the item begs to be seen, then never watched again.”

Finding Love In Bali

Finding true love anywhere these days can be difficult or the item seems maintaining the love buzz can be more of the problem, as you just need to check the statistics of divorce rates along with rising numbers of single people out there. Relationships have become dispensable like everything else with societies’ consumer mentality. Out with the old along with in with the completely new.

Bali can be not just a holiday destination for the globe-trotting surfer nevertheless people coming from all over the globe come to here to get married along with who wouldn’t? With some of the most stunning scenery along with idealistic beach settings to be found you can have a wedding of which could cost you millions, say on the island of Capri nevertheless a wedding in Bali can just be millions of Rupiah which can be far nicer on the wallet. With beach front resorts along with villas perfect for the honeymooner or couple celebrating their wedding anniversary alike the item’s very hard not to feel romantic walking along the beach when one of those killer sunsets strike. There are many beautiful couples here within the expat community who have found long lasting love along with have very committed relationships of which will stand the test of time. Kudos to them.

So what about those of us who are single along with trying to find true love on temptation island? Without trying to sound cynical, finding love in Bali can be Russian roulette at the best of times. You could either be sweet talked into the bedroom by a gorgeous little gold digger who can be looking for someone to support them along with their entire village, or you could be victim of being cheated on repeatedly. I have heard of so many cases coming from personal friends along with strangers alike stung by the sting of their free loving partners, the item’s like an everyday occurrence here. Then there can be the case of expats going out with married men or women which can be just another case of throwing the spicy dice along with expecting…what exactly?

If you have had enough of the local loving then you might just prefer ‘love’ of the one night varieties where clubs along with bars in Kuta along with Seminyak offer a haven of selections for the younger generation, or older if you like to prowl like a cougar. What a cynical way to start This particular article you might state. No, these are the cold hard facts of finding TRUE love in Bali. Firstly, you are on an island where transience abounds along with people come along with go.

For all you single people out there, there can be a light at the end of the tunnel. There are the lucky few who have managed to find love in Bali along with the item was my mission to find out just how they did of which. Some of these stories might give you some nice warm fuzzies or may cause you to raise your eyebrows along with the item can be for the latter reason they remain nameless to protect their identity. The end of This particular article will discuss some of the best ways to attract your ideal partner so you too can find love in Bali. Hallelujah.

Couple A:

She can be half Indonesian along with half Dutch, raised within the Netherlands. He can be French. They met within the surf at Nusa Dua a year ago along with kept bumping into each some other at various bars around Seminyak. They are today happily living together, surfing together daily along with creating a wonderful life together in Bali. The difficulty they face of sustaining the relationship can be of which he has to return to France each summer for work commitments so they have a couple of months apart. Facebook along with Skype are their saving grace during these times, as can be for many couples where long distance can be an issue.

Couple B: How did they meet?

At a party through mutual friends. She can be Indonesian along with he can be American. She can be also married to another man who spends most of his time in Britain. This particular couple have had their ups along with downs for obvious reasons nevertheless have continued their relationship for close to two years today. The difficulty of maintaining This particular relationship lies within the fact of which the husband does return to Bali for a couple of weeks twice a year. This particular can be a trying time for both of them along with they often split up during This particular time. They admit they do love each some other deeply, despite the fact they have had numerous breakups there can be always the inevitable ‘get back together’ situation. The passion keeps the item alive nevertheless there can be a question mark over how long This particular will continue as the American man can be considering moving away coming from Bali within the future to pursue some other career options.

Couple C: How did they meet?

At a bar in Kuta. She can be American along with he can be Australian. She has worked along with lived here for three years. This particular was a case of cat along with mouse for a while as both of them thought the some other viewed the item as just a casual thing. Until they realized they were spending every day along with night together they finally made the item official along with became a couple. Very sweet to watch. The difficulty of maintaining their relationship can be of which he has to return to Australia every second month to work. They have recently decided to both move to Australia today along with return to Bali for holidays.

So the item can happen.

When I have spoken to my single friends we all possess the same complaints. Do we actually have to go to a bar to meet someone as the item seems This particular whole island can be just geared up for of which sort of thing.

Here are some some other ideas.

If you want to meet someone spiritual, join a meditation group or even a local international church. In fact ICC based at the Mecure Hotel down past Discovery Mall can be holding a series of talks on relationships This particular month. Next Sunday their talk will be ‘How to be single along with happy’. The following week will be about how to attract a partner along with the next couple of weeks will be for married couples who want to keep their marriage solid with Christian principles, which can be not bad for everyone whether you are Christian or not.

If you are into outdoor activities, obviously the beach can be a great place to meet people. within the surf if you are not too competitive you might just want to paddle up to someone along with say hi. Running on the beach at sunset could also be a great idea. Or if you are into diving go to some diving spots along with hang out at dive clubs. Join a yoga class if you want to meet someone health-conscious along with of course the gym can be always a great place, too.

Last nevertheless not least though, using the laws of attraction, make a wish list of all the qualities you could like in a partner. Then ask yourself, could the person on This particular list want to be using a person like you? Maybe you need to make some improvements in your life to attract the person you actually want.

May you all experience love in your life today.

Last night I had the experience of a lifetime as far as taxi drivers go. I stepped into a taxi during rush hour. The driver thrusts off, throwing me back into my seat. “Where you go?” I said, “Please turn on the meter.” He smiles, “Okay Boss.” I say, “Such in addition to such Hotel.” Then shock of all shocks, he’s got a miniature T.V. on his dashboard. He’s watching a Kung Fu movie while operating! Bad enough to be operating in what we call normal traffic, although during rush hour. Insane!

I tried to reason with the guy, although all he would likely do was refer to how great the fight scenes were. I finally got so irritated in which I rose my voice, “What you do with your own life will be one thing, although you’re not going to play with mine!” Whether he understood, or This kind of was the tone of my voice we’ll never know. He turned off the T.V.

The next morning I had to go to Kuta to pick up a few things. I hailed another taxi, in addition to realized I could have walked faster than the snail’s pace we were moving along at, although the outside heat in addition to the weight of my head (tough night) kept me riding. How This kind of guy ever got a license I’ll never know. Maybe in a Coco Crunch box? What a way to start the day!

When we finally reached my destination I forgot I only had a large note in my pocket. The meter charge was only a fraction of in which. Surprisingly he had the change which he gave back minus a few notes. I said, “You owe me more.” He smiles in in which way in addition to says “No This kind of for me.” “What the hell do you mean? If I want to give you a tip in which’s my business!” “No This kind of for me”, This kind of time using a threatening look. I gave him back the same look in addition to insisted on my money. He then threatened to call the police, which I was more than happy with. He slammed one of the missing bills into my hand in addition to then began shouting in addition to pushing me out of the taxi. To say the least, I couldn’t believe This kind of guy. I caught myself in addition to thought, will be This kind of worth This kind of? I was going to give him a tip anyway.

I slammed the door in addition to didn’t look back, although you could hear his horn blasting away. So currently in which I have caught your attention here are some tips by various trippers about This kind of planet. If you happen to be bopping around Singapore you’re not required to tip, although This kind of’s graciously accepted. Off to Brazil? No Money no honey. Absolutely not! A definite no no. What are you doing in England? Pip pip in addition to all in which sort of rot. Of course my not bad man, This kind of would likely show poor form not to. Yes tipping surely. Bangkok, ahh man’s country. Not only will be tipping permitted although everything in which goes along with This kind of as well. You can bet your bottom dollar on in which one. How’d you get through Germany? If you don’t tip they’ll ask you for your papers. fresh Zealand. ‘God’s country’. They make enough off the metre. So much for in which. France, ahh gay Paris. Ooh la la. If you don’t tip you might get your money thrown back in your face. Sahib you’re in India, if you’re not inside Groovy Guru This kind of’s not only expected, This kind of’s prayed for. When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie in which’s Italy, just like the pizza anything goes. A knife in addition to a cork, a bottle in addition to a cork, in which’s the way you spell fresh York. You’d better believe This kind of, if you don’t tip any less than ten percent you’re guaranteed for insults a plenty, which can lead to who knows what. currently in which you’ve been on a need to know basis, many a happy tipping day.
